Review: Against All Grain: Celebrations by Danielle Walker

10 December 2016

When people adopt a new diet for health or personal reasons, it's the parties, holidays, and events with strong food traditions they worry about most.

In Celebrations, best-selling author Danielle Walker provides recipes and menus for twelve special occasions, from a child's birthday party and baby shower, to a backyard barbeque, romantic Valentine's Day dinner for two, and even a Halloween party. Of course, Thanksgiving, Christmas dinner, New Year's Eve party, and Easter/Passover brunch are also covered--along with suggestions for beverages and cocktails and the all-important desserts.

Nearly every recipe is photographed, and food and party images shot on location provide beautiful and creative entertaining ideas. Delicious and easy-to-prepare dishes encourage the whole family to get into the kitchen and create lasting memories--no matter what the occasion

The book starts by telling you about the Authors own health journey and I felt that made the book more personable and less preachy like some of this books can be.

I love that the recipes are grain free and how the author guides you through recipes with helpful tips for success which makes the prospect of grain free cakes and bakes a lot less daunting.

I particularly found the list of ingredients section with it's substitution information as well as it definitely helped with the shopping list! Be warned however that some of these ingredients don't come cheap and this can make this diet prohibitive but as this book is for special occasions the splurge might be worth it!

It is less like a traditional recipe book with its pages of photo, then recipe, then photo, then recipe but it has a personal story or helpful party planning tips in between which makes it an enjoyable read front to back as well as something to dip into again and again for those special recipes!

Overall, in today's culture of processed food and junk I found this book to be a practical and celebratory nod to the simple diets of the past and glass raised to the health for the future.
